How to Program Car Remotes for Chevy Vehicles

Whether you have lost or damaged your old car remote or want to sync a new remote key, it is not uncommon to need to program a new remote to work with an old car. When the time comes to do this though, the sequence of actions needed to do so can prove extremely frustrating, as the process is long and complex. This is ultimately a good thing, as it is designed to prevent the programming mode from accidentally being accessed while a vehicle is being driven, which could potentially be dangerous. Still, it can take some help to get the whole thing done.
Never fear: this guide is designed to elucidate the remotes reprogramming process for pre-2007 Chevy vehicles, and get you done and on to better things in no time.

The first step is to get into your vehicle, making sure that all the doors (as well as the trunk) are firmly shut. The car will not go into programming mode if this is not the case.
Place the key into the lock, but do not turn the key or turn on the ignition. Doing so will cancel the programming sequence and you will need to start over.
Press and hold down the unlock button on the driver’s side door handle. While continuing to hold the button down, turn the key on and then off 3 times, turning on the ignition and turning it off each time. This must be done somewhat rapidly, with no pauses in between the turns. This is generally the trickiest part of the entire process, and can take a few tries to get right. If you feel that you may have made an error, release the unlock button and wait 30 seconds before trying again.
If you have done everything correctly up to this point, the doors should lock and the unlock to inform you that the programming mode has been entered. Once in this mode, do the next step quickly, as the car will exit programming mode if nothing is done for about a minute. Press and hold down the lock button on the driver’s side door while simultaneously pressing the unlock button on the car remote. If the remotes has correctly synced, the doors will lock and unlock again. While in this mode, you can sync multiple car remotes, so long as you do it quickly.

Transponder Key Technology in Cars

How The Transponder System Works
Transponder Key
                                                      How Car Key Transponders Work
Transponder technology has seen extensive applications in many security situations and has become standard equipment in the automobile industry.
There is a tiny electronic chip embedded in your car’s key. When the correct key is inserted into the ignition it makes a connection with the energized frequency in the barrel; the energized chip can then send a code to the vehicle’s ECU, or electronic control unit, which could be considered the brains of the system.
If the code sent is correct, which it would be if you use the correct key, the immobilizing function will be disengaged and the engine can be started. Different immobilizing devices work in different ways; by cutting off the voltage to a specific function like the spark plugs, starter or fuel pump — or even a combination of the three.
You may think that your ignition key has no transponder as it appears to be molded in one piece. Nevertheless, the electronic device buried deep in the plastic key fob does not need a battery to operate as it is energized by contact in the ignition barrel. Some varieties do have a way to access this chip by opening a small compartment.
Problems with the Transponder?
If there seems to be a problem with the chip in the key, first of all, try the other key —a good reason to always invest in the extra set.  Sometimes the problem is in the ignition barrel.  A point that should always be considered.
If you have lost all your sets of keys you will need to replace them. This will involve not only the metal blade being cut to the exact configuration —keeping an imprint is a good way to expedite this — and you will also need to get the correct code programmed onto the transponder, to deactivate the immobilizing mechanism.
Although this is not your average set of front door keys, a key with a proper transponder chip can be found at many auto locksmiths as well as from the original dealer. The correct code programming can be exacted from the chassis number imprinted on your vehicle.
You could also get this info off the vehicle log book — you may be asked to provide some proof that this is indeed your car, some locksmiths and dealers will ask for more than one form of ID and the vehicle log book.
Retailers will supply car owners with a code upon purchasing the vehicle, this code is on a card and under a scratch strip for confidentiality. A dealer or locksmith might ask for it; it is necessary for programming a new transponder key.
If you have no info on the transponder key code, never fear, there are more options available at the dealer — certain locksmiths or mechanics are capable of tinkering with the ECU in the car and “jimmy-rigging” a solution

The first step is to make sure all of the doors and trunk of the vehicle is are firmly closed. If any doors are left unsecured, the car will not enter the programming mode, so it is vital that you perform this step.

Next, insert the key into the ignition. Do not turn the key until you are ready for the next step, as it is time sensitive and will not work if performed too slowly.

Now, you will need to turn the key to the on position, and then immediately turn it off 8 times in quick succession, without any pauses. Turn the key to the on position after the 8th turn. Make sure that you do not turn on the transmission during this sequence, as you only want to turn on the car. If you have done this step correctly, the car doors will lock and unlock to show that it has entered programming mode.

Once you are in programming mode, press any button on the key fob within 20 seconds. This will sync the new key fob with the vehicle. If it has successfully synced, the doors will lock to confirm that the programming is done. Unlock the vehicle with the fob to make sure that it works. You can continue to program key fobs for 20 seconds after each round of programming is completed.

You do not have to do anything to exit the programming mode, as the car will automatically do so after 20 seconds of inaction. If you have more questions about programming a Ford key fob, please visit Americas Lock and Key Facebook Page and send a message.
